All laptops today can be connected to an external secondary display. You can easily connect your old PC screen to your laptop as a secondary display. Let us see how to connect a secondary monitor to your laptop.
How to Connect a Secondary Monitor to Your Laptop
To begin with, connect the secondary monitor to your laptop’s 15-pin video connection. Once connected, laptop should automatically detect the external monitor as an external display hardware.
By default, few laptops will show the active screen on both the screens(laptop and external display). This two side display at the same time is known as the mirror view. Use function keys combination (Fn + F5, Fn + F3, Fn + F8 and Fn + F9) to toggle in-between the two connected screens.
If it doesn’t show, click Start and select Control Panel and follow the steps given below:
- Under Control Panel, go to Appearance and then select Personalization.
- Select ‘Connect an external display’ from the Display menu.
- Select ‘Extend these displays’ from the ‘Multiple displays’ drop-down menu.
- Now you can see that the screens are numbered as 1 and 2. If you’re unsure to which screen is which, you can press the Identify button to get help.
You can also adjust the screen resolution of each screen. To adjust the screen resolution, click on the Display drop-down menu, select a display and click Resolution. Use the slider to adjust the screen’s resolution.
The keys pressed to switch displays are dependent on the model and manufacturer of the laptop. You must refer to laptop’s user manual to find the right key combination.
Please note that newer laptops and monitors have a DVI/HDMI port. If one of the display has a DVI and other has a VGA connection. You will need a video-converter to convert VGA into DVI.
