How to download and install Linux Kernel 4.0 RC1 on Ubuntu Systems. Install/Upgrade to Kernel 4.0 RC1 on Ubuntu 14.04/14.10, Linux Mint, Elementary OS, Linux Deepin and other Ubuntu Derivatives.
Please note that currently the Kernel 4.0 RC1 is not available via PPA. In order to download and install the latest version of Kernel, download the deb packages (Kernel 4.0 RC1) via kernel.ubuntu.com and then install it on the system.
Install Kernel 4.0 RC1 on 32 Bit Ubuntu Systems
Open Terminal and run the following command to download and install Kernel 4.0 RC1 on 32 Bit Ubuntu Systems:
cd /tmp
wget \
kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.0-rc1-vivid/linux-headers-4.0.0-040000rc1_4.0.0-040000rc1.201502222235_all.deb \
kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.0-rc1-vivid/linux-headers-4.0.0-040000rc1-generic_4.0.0-040000rc1.201502222235_i386.deb \
kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.0-rc1-vivid/linux-image-4.0.0-040000rc1-generic_4.0.0-040000rc1.201502222235_i386.deb
sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-4.0*.deb linux-image-4.0*.deb
Install Kernel 4.0 RC1 on 64 Bit Ubuntu Systems
Open Terminal and run the following command to download and install Kernel 4.0 RC1 on 64 Bit Ubuntu Systems:
cd /tmp
wget \
kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.0-rc1-vivid/linux-headers-4.0.0-040000rc1_4.0.0-040000rc1.201502222235_all.deb \
kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.0-rc1-vivid/linux-headers-4.0.0-040000rc1-generic_4.0.0-040000rc1.201502222235_amd64.deb \
kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.0-rc1-vivid/linux-image-4.0.0-040000rc1-generic_4.0.0-040000rc1.201502222235_amd64.deb
sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-4.0*.deb linux-image-4.0*.deb
Once the Kernel 4.0 RC1 is successfully installed, reboot/restart the system manually or run the following command:
sudo reboot
To remove and uninstall the Kernel 4.0 RC1:
sudo apt-get remove linux-header-3.14* linux-image-3.14*
