Download GNOME 3.16. How to upgrade Gnome 3.16 in Ubuntu 15.04, Ubuntu 14.04 and Derivarives. Terminal commands to add the GNOME 3.16 Staging PPA. The GNOME 3.16 isn’t included in Ubuntu 15.04.
GNOME 3.16 is the latest version of GNOME 3, and is the result of six months’ work by the GNOME project. It includes major new features, as well as a large number of smaller improvements and enhancements. The release incorporates 33525 changes, made by approximately 1043 contributors.
Other notable changes are:
- GNOME 3’s notifications system has been overhauled for 3.16.
- The calendar drop down, which is accessed from the time indicator in the top bar, has also been redesigned for 3.16. Not only does it now present the notifications history, but it also shows event reminders and world times.
- The Files application has had a number of significant updates for 3.16. The grid and list views have been improved, so that they provide bigger thumbnails, easier to read rows, and have a more attractive appearance.
- GNOME 3’s visuals have been updated for 3.16. The Activities Overview, login screen, system menus and other system components have been given a new, more contemporary look.
- 3.16 introduces a new style of scrollbar for GNOME 3.
- GNOME’s Image Viewer application has been redesigned for this release.
Upgrade Gnome 3.16 in Ubuntu 15.04
Open Terminal and run the following commands to download and upgrade GNOME 3.16 in Ubuntu 15.04, Ubuntu 14.04 and Derivatives:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -y
sudo add-apt-repository ppa: gnome3-team / gnome3-staging
sudo add-apt-repository ppa: gnome3-team / gnome3
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gnome-shell gnome-session
After the installation process is complete, restart the system.
You can also install the additional apps which are not installed by default like GNOME Maps, Polari IRC client and lightweight browser. To install these apps, run the following command:
sudo apt-get install polari gnome-music gnome-photos gnome-maps gnome-weather epiphany-browser
Revert Back To Gnome 3.14
How to downgrade from GNOME 3.16 to GNOME 3.14. To revert back to Gnome 3.14, run the following commands:
sudo apt-get install ppa-purge
sudo ppa-purge ppa: gnome3-team / gnome3-staging
And to change the repository with a stable Gnome, run the below given command:
sudo ppa-purge ppa: gnome3-team / gnome3
After running the above command, please restart the system.
