Install SubNetCalc (IPv4/IPv6 Subnet Address Calculator) on Ubuntu 15.04, Ubuntu 14.04 & Ubuntu 14.10

By Sourabh / July 16, 2015 Category: How To, Ubuntu

SubNetCalc is a command-line subnet address calculator for Linux Ubuntu. Install SubNetCalc 2.4.2 on Ubuntu 15.04, Ubuntu 14.04 and Ubuntu 14.10. RS

subnetcalc is an IPv4/IPv6 subnet address calculator. For given IPv4 or IPv6 address and netmask or prefix length, it calculates network address, broadcast address, maximum number of hosts and host address range. Also, it prints the addresses in binary format for better understandability. Furthermore, it prints useful information on specific address types (e.g. type, scope, interface ID, etc.).

For Ubuntu the subnetcalc — IPv4/IPv6 Subnet Calculator has the following format:

subnetcalc [Address] [Netmask/Prefix] [-n] [-uniquelocal] [-uniquelocalhq]

subnetcalc-01

Arguments – The following arguments have to be provided:

  • Address – The IP address. If a hostname is provided here, it is tried to resolve the address by a DNS server and the first returned address is used. Internationalized Domain Names (IDN) are supported.
  • Netmask/Prefix – The netmask or prefix length (0-32 for IPv4; 0-128 for IPv6).
  • -n – Skip trying a reverse DNS lookup.

RS PLIB/Reliable Server Pooling (RSerPool) is a framework for server pool management and access. It is an IETF standard, which has been developed by the IETF RSerPool Working Group and documented in RFC 5351 to RFC 5356. From the programmer’s perspective, a pool is mainly seen as a highly available server. RSerPool realizes a Session Layer in the OSI model. The API to access this Session Layer is very similar to TCP/IP socket programming, so using RSerPool functionalities in own programs is quite easy.

Run the following commands in Terminal to install the subnetcalc package:

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:dreibh/ppa
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install subnetcalc

To uninstall and remove Subnetcalc, run the command:

$ sudo apt-get remove subnetcalc
