Canonical has released new Linux Kernel updates for Ubuntu 15.04, Ubuntu 14.04, and Ubuntu 12.04 (and Derivatives). These August 2015 Linux Kernel updates fixes three Kernel vulnerability and security flaws.
Out of the three security flaws one Kernel vulnerability is for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, and one for Ubuntu 15.04 and one for Ubuntu 14.04. The common Linux Kernel vulnerability is in Linux kernel’s Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) address configuration lists. Others were discovered in Linux kernel’s handling of invalid User Datagram Protocol (UDP). These security flaws could lead to denial of service attacks (DOS-Attacks) on Linux Ubuntu Systems.
Update Linux Ubuntu Systems
Canonical has urged all Linux Ubuntu users – Ubuntu 15.04, Ubuntu 14.04 and Ubuntu 12.04 – to update their systems ASAP. Please note that the updates must be done via the official channels.
Here’s how to update the Linux Ubuntu System:
- Via GUI: To update the Linux Ubuntu System, simply open the Software Updater tool and search and apply all the existing updates.
- Via CLI: Open Terminal and run the following commands to perform a system update:
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Please note that you will have to restart the system after the update.
It is also vital to verify that the downloaded kernel packages match:

- linux-image-3.13.0-62 (3.13.0-62.102) on Ubuntu 14.04
- linux-image-3.2.0-89 (3.2.0-89.127) on Ubuntu 12.04
