Install digiKam 4.14.0, via PPA on Ubuntu 15.04 & Ubuntu 14.04

Digital photo management application for Linux Ubuntu, digiKam 4.14.0 released. Install digiKam 4.14.0, via PPA on Ubuntu 15.04, Ubuntu 14.04 and Derivatives.

DigiKam is a popular photo management program designed for editing images. It can be used to import, organize and export digital photos to and from your computer. With DigiKam you can :

  • import pictures
  • organize your collection
  • view items
  • edit and enhance
  • create (slideshows, calendar, print, …)
  • share your creations (using social web services, email, your own web allery, …)

digiKam Software Collection 4.14.0 has more than 20 bugs that have been closed. The release will be the last stable release dedicated from 4.x series and the product company now focuses on next 5.0.0 release planed on spring 2016. In this release, OpenCV 3.x is now supported for face management and others tools based on OpenCV algorithm. SOme work have been done about overlay icon to improve usability. Icons are now re-sized accordingly with thumbnail sizes, and a new icon have been add to quickly run slideshow in full-screen mode.

Bugs that have been fixed:

  1. Album icon view stores both jpeg and raw (nef), handle both as one [patch][/patch]
  2. Position of inserted text is not exact [patch][/patch]
  3. digikam text decoration font size problem
  4. Color effects: Neon / Find edges don’t take parameters correctly
  5. scale overlay action icons accordingly with thumb size [patch][/patch]
  6. moving an album from one collection to another one do not update information
  7. don’t get filtered as raw (group of items relevant)
  8. Thumbnails size can not be changed in MapView mode
  9. Allow a simpler way to place a photo in full-screen using overlay [patch][/patch]
  10. crash on scanning video directory
  11. Auto-creation of date-based sub-albums ignored
  12. digikam compile fine with OpenCV 2.X but not with 3.x
  13. Digikam doesn’t match Nikon lenses 35mm f/1.8G and 50mm f/1.8G
  14. Crash on delete into image editor
  15. apply face tags to multiple images
  16. Wrong date (1970-01-01) on rename during raw import from Nikon D750
  17. The preview has blocky artifacts reminiscent of chroma subsampling
  18. crash shortly after opening application
  19. Using Batch Queue Manager to extract preview images loses metadata
  20. Digikam 2.8 crash when opening geolocation plugin
  21. Unable to upload large image to flickr even though I’m resizing it
  22. Export to facebook crashes
  23. Facebook export: Filename is used as Description
  24. photos are compressed when exported to picasa

Install DigiKam 4.14.0

Run the following commands in Terminal to install DigiKam:


sudo add-apt-repository ppa:philip5/kubuntu-backports
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:philip5/extra
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install digikam

The digiKam software collection can be downloaded from the KDE mirrors.
