Opera 40 web browser brings free VPN for Ubuntu Linux. Users can connect to VPN on Ubuntu. Opera 40 (on Chromium 53.0) comes with free, unlimited, in-built VPN service. VPN is a free service, and the amount of data you are allowed to transfer is unlimited.
When turned on, the browser VPN creates a secure connection to one of Opera’s five server locations around the world. The VPN lets you choose where to appear on the internet, giving you online privacy and security a boost while making content easier to access.
VPN – Virtual Private Network
Normally, your browser connects directly to websites, allowing websites to identify your IP address and its approximate location. With VPN, you connect to websites via a VPN server. As a result, your apparent location changes to the location of the server. Secure proxy provided by SurfEasy Inc., an Opera company based in Canada.
Enable VPN on Ubuntu (using Opera)
To enable VPN on Opera:
- From the main menu, select Settings.
- Click Privacy & security on the sidebar.
- Under VPN, tick the Enable VPN checkbox.
When you enable VPN, it starts automatically, and the blue VPN badge appears in the combined search and address bar. Click on the badge, and you will see an on/off switch, information about the amount of data transferred, the virtual location, and the the virtual IP address. When in automatic location mode, browsing via the VPN is always at maximum available speed.
From the point-of-view of websites, the browser is now located in the country given by the virtual location. To change your virtual location, select a country from the list. If you do not choose a country, you are automatically assigned an “optimal location”. To turn off VPN, flip the switch.
There are various options that can be configured:
Autofill – Enable auto-filling of forms on webpages
Passwords – Offer to save passwords I enter on the web

- Use any suitable network interface (recommended)
- Use default public and private network interfaces only
- Use default public network interfaces only
- Disable non-proxied UDP
Cookies
- Allow local data to be set (recommended)
- Keep local data only until I quit my browser
- Block sites from setting any data
- Block third-party cookies and site data
Because the connection from your browser to the VPN server is encrypted, even if the local network is not, VPN enhances your privacy on the local network. You can hide your browsing activities from other users of that network.
