FFmpeg 4.2 “Ada” is released. Here is how to install FFmpeg 4.2 in Ubuntu 18.04 and Linux Mint 19 Series. FFmpeg 4.2 was released on 2019-08-05. It is the latest stable FFmpeg release from the 4.2 release branch, which was cut from master on 2019-07-21.
FFmpeg is the leading multimedia framework, able to decode, encode, transcode, mux, demux, stream, filter and play pretty much anything that humans and machines have created. It supports the most obscure ancient formats up to the cutting edge. No matter if they were designed by some standards committee, the community or a corporation.
It is also highly portable: FFmpeg compiles, runs, and passes our testing infrastructure FATE across Linux, Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, the BSDs, Solaris, etc. under a wide variety of build environments, machine architectures, and configurations.
It contains libavcodec, libavutil, libavformat, libavfilter, libavdevice, libswscale and libswresample which can be used by applications. As well as FFmpeg, ffplay and ffprobe which can be used by end users for transcoding and playing.

Install FFmpeg 4.2 in Ubuntu
Run the following commands to install FFmpeg 4.2 in Ubuntu Linux and other Ubuntu Derivatives via PPA:
sudo apt-get update
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:jonathonf/ffmpeg-4
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ffmpeg
Once installed, restart the system to apply the changes.
Note that ffmpeg is a very fast video and audio converter that can also grab from a live audio/video source. It can also convert between arbitrary sample rates and resize video on the fly with a high quality polyphase filter.
NOTE: Approximately every 6 months the FFmpeg project makes a new major release. Between major releases point releases will appear that add important bug fixes but no new features. Note that these releases are intended for distributors and system integrators. Users that wish to compile from source themselves are strongly encouraged to consider using the development branch (see above), this is the only version on which FFmpeg developers actively work. The release branches only cherry pick selected changes from the development branch, which therefore receives much more and much faster bug fixes such as additional features and security patches.
