Instagram story analytics explained. This post is all about understanding Instagram story insights and its various Instagram stories engagement metrics.
Instagram Story
Instagram Story was rolled out on August 02, 2016. And since then, over the past two years, Stories has evolved to become the home for self-expression and casual sharing for more than 400 million Instagrammers every day.
To view someone’s story, just tap on their profile photo. It’s easy to view stories at your own pace: tap to go back and forward or swipe to jump to another person’s story. If you want to comment on something you see, you can tap and send a private message to that person on Instagram Direct. Unlike regular posts, there are no likes or public comments.

There are two ways of posting stories on Instagram
- Taking the picture or video directly from the app
- Uploading photo or video from camera roll
Instagram Story Dimensions
Instagram story dimensions are 1080px by 1920px – (9:16 aspect ratio). Instagram Story image or video should be 1080 pixels wide and 1920 pixels in height. With an aspect ratio of 9:16. Other size metrics are :
Dimensions: 1080 x 1920 pixels
Aspect Ratio: 9:16
Minimum Resolution: 600 x 1067 pixels
Maximum File Size: 4 GB
Instagram Story Analytics
Please Note:
- In order to have access to analytics for Instagram Stories, you need to have a business account.
- Instagram Stories are only available for 24 hours. In order to view them after 24 hrs, you will have to access them via Story Archive. To visit Instagram Story/Post archive, go to your profile, click the clock icon in the upper left corner, and then select the Story Archive.
Instagram Stories analytics are divided into three categories: Interactions, Discovery, and Navigation.
Interactions
The interaction metric represents the total actions people take has taken upon the respective Instagram Story. It includes Story replies and Instagram profile visits.
- Replies: The number of times people reply to the Instagram Story.
- Profile Visits: The number of times people visit the Instagram profile from the Story.
- Sticker Taps: The number of times people have tapped on a sticker, geotag, hashtag, mention, or product, which is placed on the Instagram Story.
Discovery
Discovery measures the number of accounts that view the Instagram Story.
- Impressions: The total number of times the Instagram Story was viewed. In simple words, impressions is the total number of views on each of the individual Instagram Stories.
- Follows: The number of accounts that started following you after seeing the Instagram Story.
Navigation
Navigation displays the overall completion rate of the Instagram Story. Under Navigation tab, you’ll see the metrics such as total number of navigational actions people have taken from the said Instagram story.
- Back: The number of taps to see the previous Instagram story.
- Forward: The number of taps to see the next Instagram story. It also includes the fact that the current Instagram story was completly viewed.
- Next Story: The number of swipes to the next account’s Instagram story.
- Exited: The number of times people closed the Instagram story.
Please note the difference between “Reach” and “Impressions”. Reach is the the number of visits a unique account viewed each slide in your story, whereas impressions is the total number of views on each of your individual Instagram Stories.
