Install Audacious 4.2 Music Player for Linux Ubuntu

By Sourabh / July 11, 2022 Category: How To, Ubuntu

Terminal commands to install Audacious music player on Linux Ubuntu. Here is how to install and use Audacious on Linux Ubuntu Systems. Audacious Music Player 4.2 is the latest release and can be installed via Ubuntu PPA.

Audacious is a free advanced audio player for Linux Ubuntu and many other UNIX-compatible systems. It focuses on low resource usage, high audio quality, and support for a wide range of audio formats. It was originally based on Beep Media Player, which was in turn based on XMMS.

Users can drag and drop folders and individual song files, search for artists and albums in your entire music library, or create and edit your own custom playlists. Listen to CD’s or stream music from the Internet.

Audacious Music Player 4.2

Audacious Music Player 4.2 comes with following new and improved features:

  • Add a built-in dark theme using Qt’s Fusion style (default on Windows)
  • Add a dark theme-friendly variant of the built-in fallback icons, and make both built-in icon sets user-selectable
  • Add partial support for Ogg FLAC streams (#1075, thanks Jim Turner)
  • Preselect the filename of an imported playlist when exporting it again (#1128)
  • Automatically set the title of an imported playlist based on the filename (#1129)
  • Add a Search and Select dialog to the Winamp interface in Qt mode (#1138)
  • Add a Jump to Song dialog to the Winamp interface in Qt mode (thanks Steve Storey)
  • Add formatter syntax to allow truncating title strings (thanks iDarkTemplar)

Run the following commands in terminal to install Audacious Music Player 4.2 via Ubuntu PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/apps
sudo apt update
sudo apt install audacious audacious-plugins

Packages in this PPA: audacious, ap-hotspot, awn-applet-radio, awn-applet-wm, calise, cmus, dockbarx, dockbarx-themes-extra, dropbox-share, emerald, exaile, fbmessenger, gnome-subtitles, gnome-window-applets, grsync, grive, gthumb, launchpad-getkeys, mc, mdm (Mint Display Manager), minitunes, minitube, musique, notifyosdconfig, nautilus-columns, powertop, ppa-purge, rosa-media-player, fixed pulseaudio-equalizer, subtitleeditor, syncwall, umplayer, unity-reboot, wimlib, youtube-dl, xfce4-dockbarx-plugin, xournal, yad, yarock and others. Almost all packages are updated to their latest version.

If you wish to uninstall Audacious and remove it from your system, run:

sudo apt remove --autoremove audacious audacious-plugins
sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/apps

NOTE: The Audacious source is split into two packages. The “audacious” package needs to be installed before “audacious-plugins”. In each package, there is a file named INSTALL with further instructions for compiling and installing.

Most users should download the current stable release. Testing releases are likely to have problems and may not work at all. If you do install a testing release, please report any problems you find.
