The default Totem “GNOME Videos” video player has not been actively maintained since 2022 and is set to be replaced by the modern Showtime Video Player. The Showtime is written in the Python, utilizes GTK4 and uses Libadwaita user interface. It enables distraction-free viewing experience.

Install Showtime GNOME Video Player on Ubuntu
Showtime is in its early phase, but yet can be installed on Ubuntu Linux Systems. Run the following commands to install Showtime GNOME video player on Ubuntu Linux
$ sudo apt install flatpak
$ sudo flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists gnome-nightly https://nightly.gnome.org/gnome-nightly.flatpakrepo
$ flatpak install gnome-nightly org.gnome.Showtime.Devel
$ flatpak run org.gnome.Showtime.Devel
Once installed, it can be opened from Ubuntu applications menu. Note that when launched for the first time, it will ask you to open a media file from the file browser, where you can select and play your video in Showtime.
If you wish to uninstall Showtime from your Linux system, run the following commands:
$ flatpak uninstall --delete-data org.gnome.Showtime.Devel
$ flatpak remote-delete gnome-nightly
$ sudo apt remove --purge flatpak
