Please note that when you install Thunderbird 38.5.1, it automatically replaces the previous version of Thunderbird installed on your system. Run the following commands in Terminal to install Thunderbird 38.5.1 on Ubuntu 15.10, Ubuntu 15.04, Ubuntu 14.04 and Ubuntu 14.10 Systems:
On 32 bit Linux Ubuntu Systems
$ https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/releases/38.5.1/linux-i686/en-US/thunderbird-38.5.1.tar.bz2
$ tar -xjvf thunderbird-*.tar.bz2
$ sudo rm -rf /opt/thunderbird*
$ sudo mv thunderbird /opt/thunderbird
$ sudo ln -sf /opt/thunderbird/thunderbird /usr/bin/thunderbird
On 64 bit Linux Ubuntu Systems
$ wget ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/releases/38.5.1/linux-x86_64/en-US/thunderbird-38.5.1.tar.bz2
$ tar -xjvf thunderbird*.tar.bz2
$ sudo rm -rf /opt/thunderbird*
$ sudo mv thunderbird /opt/thunderbird
$ sudo ln -sf /opt/thunderbird/thunderbird /usr/bin/thunderbird
Once installed, open the newly installed Thunderbird 38.5.1 app from Ubuntu Dash or Terminal. Open Terminal and type Thunderbird and press enter.
