XScreenSaver is the standard screen saver collection shipped on most Linux and Unix systems running the X11 Window System. On X11 systems, XScreenSaver is both, a large collection of screen savers; and it is also the framework for blanking and locking the screen.
XScreenSaver 5.36 is the latest release of the XScreenSaver application. It brings the following changes:
- New hacks, discoball, cubetwist, cubestack, splodesic and hexstrut.
- OSX: loading image files works in dymaxionmap, glplanet, lavalite, pulsar, gleidescope and extrusion.
- Several new programs in m6502.
- Better titles in photopile.
Install XScreenSaver on Ubuntu
XScreenSaver can be easily installed on Ubuntu 16.10, Ubuntu 16.04 and other Ubuntu Derivatives. Run the following commands in Terminal to install XScreenSaver on Ubuntu:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:hda-me/xscreensaver
sudo apt update
sudo apt install xscreensaver
Once installed, open XScreenSaver from Ubuntu Dash. For any help, run the command xscreensaver –help.
If you want to use XScreenSaver on autostart, you will have to remove gnome-screensaver. To remove gnome-screensaver and use XScreenSaver (autostart), execute the command “sudo apt remove gnome-screensaver” (without quotes to remove gnome screensaver). Once it is removed, use the Startup applications tool to include it in the list.
