Download & Install Samba 4.4.5 On Ubuntu 16.04

By Sourabh / July 11, 2016 Category: How To, Ubuntu

Samba 4.4.5 available for download. How to install Samba 4.4.5 on Ubuntu 16.04. Samba is used for file sharing on Ubuntu Linux Systems.  Samba is an extremely useful networking tool for anyone who has both Windows and Unix systems on his network. Running on a Unix system, it allows Windows to share files and printers on the Unix host, and it also allows Unix users to access resources shared by Windows systems.

Samba is the standard Windows interoperability suite of programs for Linux and Unix. Samba is an important component to seamlessly integrate Linux/Unix Servers and Desktops into Active Directory environments. It can function both as a domain controller or as a regular domain member.  Samba provides file and print services for Microsoft Windows clients. These services may be hosted off any TCP/IP-enabled platform. The original deployment platforms were UNIX and Linux, though today it is in common use across a broad variety of systems.

The Samba project includes not only an impressive feature set in file and print serving capabilities, but has been extended to include client functionality, utilities to ease migration to Samba, tools to aid interoperability with Microsoft Windows, and administration tools.

A Samba server offers the following services:

  • Share one or more directory trees
  • Share one or more Distributed filesystem (Dfs) trees
  • Share printers installed on the server among Windows clients on the network
  • Assist clients with network browsing
  • Authenticate clients logging onto a Windows domain
  • Provide or assist with Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) name-server resolution

The Samba suite also includes client tools that allow users on a Unix system to access folders and printers that Windows systems and Samba servers offer on the network.
