How to install and use Facebook Messenger on Ubuntu Linux Systems. Install Messenger for Desktop on Linxu Ubuntu, the unofficial Facebook Messenger client for Linux Ubuntu. Messenger for Desktop is a simple & beautiful desktop client for Facebook Messenger. Chat without distractions on OS X, Windows and Linux.

Messenger for Desktop can be used to make HD voice and video calls anywhere in the world. It can easily snap photos and shoot videos, record voice messages and supports group chat. It also supports native notifications and custom themes.

Messenger for Desktop v2.0 is the latest of the Facebook Messenger client for Linux Ubuntu Systems. It comes with various fixes and improvements. Users can now toggle to auto-hide the sidebar. It also brings various Dependency updates.

Please make a note to download the stable version. The stable release is more thoroughly tested; it receives new features later, but there’s a lower chance that things will go wrong.

Install Messenger for Desktop Ubuntu or Debian 8

Please note that the Messenger for Desktop application is not affiliated with Facebook. This is NOT an official product.

  • Download messengerfordesktop-x.x.x-linux-arch.deb
  • Double click and install, or run dpkg -i messengerfordesktop-x.x.x-linux-arch.deb in the terminal “sudo dpkg -i Messenger_linux*.deb”
  • Start the app with your app launcher or by running messengerfordesktop in a terminal
  • Done!

Ubuntu users can also install Messenger for Desktop using terminal commands:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install messengerfordesktop

Once installed, open the messengerfordesktop application from Ubuntu Dash.
