Install Pidgin 2.12 in Ubuntu 16.10 and Ubuntu 16.04 via PPA. Pidgin 2.12.0 is the latest release of the Pidgin internet messenger application. Pidgin 2.12.0 removed protocols that were not being maintained: Facebook XMPP, MSN, MySpace, Mxit, and Yahoo!. These will show up as unknown in your account lists until you delete them.
Pidgin is compatible with the following chat networks out of the box: AIM, ICQ, Google Talk, Jabber/XMPP, MSN Messenger, Yahoo!, Bonjour, Gadu-Gadu, IRC, Novell GroupWise Messenger, Lotus Sametime, SILC, SIMPLE, MXit, and Zephyr. It can support many more with plugins.
Pidgin supports many features of these chat networks, such as file transfers, away messages, buddy icons, custom smilies, and typing notifications. Numerous plugins also extend Pidgin’s functionality above and beyond the standard features.

Install Pidgin 2.12 in Ubuntu
Run the following commands in Terminal to install Pidgin 2.12 in Ubuntu 16.10 and Ubuntu 16.04 via PPA:
sudo apt update
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:jonathonf/backports
sudo apt update
sudo apt install pidgin
Once installed, open the Pigin app from Ubuntu Dash.
