Best Linux video player 2018 edition. Download these video players for Linux Ubuntu. These open source video players for Linux are able to play all kinds of video. Some of them also play YouTube videos.
I am not covering VLC in this post as it is the default app for music and video files on Linux Ubuntu Systems.
MPV Player
MPV is a video player based on MPlayer/mplayer2. It supports a wide variety of video file formats, audio and video codecs, and subtitle types. Generally, mpv should work with the latest release as well as the git version of both FFmpeg and Libav. But FFmpeg is preferred, and some mpv features work with FFmpeg only (subtitle formats in particular).
Run the following commands in Terminal to install MPV Media Player on Ubuntu Linux:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mc3man/mpv-tests
sudo apt update
sudo apt install mpv
Once installed, open the MPV media player from Ubuntu Dash. Note that you won’t find any menu options. Simply drop the media file into the player window to play.
SMPlayer
SMPlayer music player with built-in codecs for Linux Ubuntu. SMPlayer intends to be a complete front-end for MPlayer, from basic features like playing videos, DVDs, and VCDs to more advanced features like support for MPlayer filters and more. Run the following commands in terminal to install the latest version of SMPlayer 17.10 on Ubuntu Systems, via PPA:
$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:rvm/smplayer
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install smplayer smplayer-themes smplayer-skins
Once installed, start the SMPlayer from Ubuntu Dash.

Run the following commands in terminal to install Kodi on Ubuntu and Linux Mint Systems:
sudo apt update
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:team-xbmc/ppa
sudo apt update
sudo apt install kodi
Once installed, open Kodi from Ubuntu Systems.
MPlayer
MPlayer is a movie player which runs on many systems (see the documentation). It plays most MPEG/VOB, AVI, Ogg/OGM, VIVO, ASF/WMA/WMV, QT/MOV/MP4, RealMedia, Matroska, NUT, NuppelVideo, FLI, YUV4MPEG, FILM, RoQ, PVA files, supported by many native, XAnim, and Win32 DLL codecs.
