Ubuntu 24.10 Release Date and Features

Ubuntu 24.10 “Oracular Oriole” was slated for release on October 10th, 2024, featuring the upcoming GNOME 47 desktop and Linux 6.10 kernel.

The Kernel Freeze is scheduled for 26 September 2024 and Final Freeze for 03 October 2024. Ubuntu 24.10 will be supported for 9 months until July 2025.

Some of the much anticipated new features in 24.10 are:

  • Updated Packages
  • Linux kernel
  • systemd v255.4
  • Netplan v1.0
  • Toolchain Upgrades
  • GCC is updated to the 14, binutils to 2.42, and glibc to 2.39.
  • Python now defaults to version 3.12
  • OpenJDK now defaults to LTS version 21
  • LLVM now defaults to version 18
  • Rust toolchain defaults to version 1.75
  • Golang is updated to 1.23
  • .NET 8 is now default

Note that Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS is supported until at least 2029.
