Install SMPlayer 17 In Ubuntu 17.10 via PPA

By Sourabh / November 3, 2017 Category: How To, Ubuntu

Install SMPlayer 17 in Ubuntu 17.10 and Ubuntu 17.04 via PPA. SMPlayer is a media player for Linux with built-in codecs that can play virtually all video and audio formats. It doesn’t need any external codecs. Just install SMPlayer and you’ll be able to play all formats without the hassle to find and install codec packs. SMPlayer supports the most known formats and codecs: avi, mp4, mkv, mpeg, mov, divx, h.264… you can play all of them, thanks to its built-in codecs. You don’t need to find and install third party codecs.

One of the most interesting features of SMPlayer: it remembers the settings of all files you play. So you start to watch a movie but you have to leave… don’t worry, when you open that movie again it will be resumed at the same point you left it, and with the same settings: audio track, subtitles, volume and etc.

SMPlayer is a graphical user interface (GUI) for the award-winning MPlayer, which is capable of playing almost all known video and audio formats. But apart from providing access for the most common and useful options of MPlayer, SMPlayer adds other interesting features like the possibility to play Youtube videos or download subtitles.

SMPlayer can play YouTube videos and it’s also available an optional plugin to search for YouTube videos. SMPlayer comes with several skins and icon themes, so you can easily change the look of the player. SMPlayer can search and download subtitles from opensubtitles.org.

SMplayer Version 17.10.2

  • New option in Preferences -> Network to select the preferred quality for streaming sites such as DailyMotion, Vimeo and so on (all those which are handled by youtube-dl).
  • The audio equalizer is now disabled by default on Linux to prevent a no sound problem for users with old versions of mpv.
  • Fix some problems with the letterbox filter (the ‘add black borders’ option).
  • The HDPI support is now also enabled on the portable package for Windows.
  • Fix: now the time is correctly displayed in the thumbnail generator pictures when SMPlayer is built with Qt 5.
