Fix: Ubuntu Desktop Icons Missing

By Sourabh / February 10, 2017 Category: How To, Ubuntu

Resolve Ubuntu Desktop’s icons missing; What to do when Ubuntu Desktop not showing after login. Fix: Ubuntu Desktop not loading after login – Ubuntu with no unity or no launcher. In many cases Ubuntu launcher goes missing and Ubuntu Desktop doesnt loads properly.

Method 1

To use this method you will need compizconfig-settings-manager to be installed on Ubuntu. To install run the command “sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager” If CCSM is already installed, follow the steps given below:

Open a terminal with Ctrl+Alt+T.
If this doesn’t works:
Right click on the Desktop and select “Open terminal here.”
By pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 and log in
Now run the command “DISPLAY=:0 ccsm &” in Terminal.
Please note that if you have been using TTY, switch back to the graphical interface by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F7 or Ctrl+Alt+F8. Whichover works for you.
Now when you see the CompizConfig Settings Manager window.
Look for the Unity plugin. Click and enable it.
When asked “Ubuntu Unity Plugin requires the plugin OpenGL.” “Enable Ubuntu Unity Plugin / Enable OpenGL”
After these steps, everything should work just perfect. Please note to restart the system manually.

Method 2

Open Terminal and run the following commands:

export DISPLAY=:0
sudo dconf reset -f /org/compiz/
setsid unity
sudo reboot

Method 3

Press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to access command line interface. When asked to login, enter the regular username and password. Open Terminal and run the following commands:

rm -rf ~/.config
mv ~/.config Documents/Backupcfg
sudo reboot

I hope that any of the above methods should solve the problem.
