How Much RAM Is Needed For Ubuntu PC

By Sourabh / April 8, 2026 Category: How To, Ubuntu

How much RAM is needed for Ubuntu PC? The minimum system requirements for Linux Ubuntu has been amped.

Ubuntu’s recommended system requirements has been revised and Ubuntu 26.04 LTS now requires 6 GB of RAM and a dual-core 2GHz processor, which is way higher than Windows 11’s 4 GB RAM requirement.

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS needs a dual-core 2.0 GHz processor, at least 6 GB of RAM, and 25 GB of free storage. Windows 11 requires a dual-core 1.0 GHz processor, at least 4 GB of RAM, TPM 2.0 security, and 64 GB of storage.

Ubuntu 26.04 needs more RAM but less storage and no TPM requirement, while Windows 11 needs TPM and more disk space.

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS release notes by documentation.ubuntu.com says:

“Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS requires a 2 GHz dual-core processor or better, a minimum of 6GB RAM and 25 GB of free hard drive space. Requirements for Ubuntu Server 26.04 LTS (with specific use case), starting as low as 1.5 GB RAM and 4 GB of hard drive space.

For ISO-based installs, you will need a USB port or DVD drive for the installation media. Alternatively, Ubuntu Server is also available as pre-built images for cloud, virtualized, and bare-metal environments, which utilize their own deployment mechanisms.

While an internet connection is recommended for updates and additional software, it is not required for the initial installation.”
