How To Install The Unity 8 Desktop on Ubuntu 15.04, Ubuntu 14.04 & Derivatives

By Sourabh / June 4, 2015 Category: How To, Ubuntu

Install Unity 8 Desktop and Mir in Ubuntu 15.04, Ubuntu 14.04 and Derivatives. You can test Unity 8 and Mir on any supported Ubuntu OS.

Canonical has made it possible to install and test the latest Unity 8 desktop environment on any Ubuntu system. The Unity 8 can be installed via PPA.

The Unity 8 Desktop (Preview) in an LXC is the new Unity 8 desktop shell running on the Mir display technology. Users can use the latest versions of Unity 8 and Mir with the latest packages. Users can also log in to the Unity 8 LXC session from LightDM just as they would any normal session.

To install Unity 8 Desktop on Ubuntu OS, run the following commands in Terminal:

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:unity8-desktop-session-team/unity8-preview-lxc
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install unity8-lxc
sudo unity8-lxc-setup

If LightDM is upgraded to a newer version, you must restart the system to load the lightdm.

Alternative installation for Utopic and later Ubuntu versions

To install and use the latest unity8-lxc development package from the PPA on later Ubuntu versions, run the following commands:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install unity8-lxc

For more information about the process, see the official wiki [Link].
